Watercraft & Outboards

A personal watercraft (PWC) is a small powered vessel driven by an inboard engine and a water-jet pump, on which the rider sits, stands or kneels on top of the hull rather than inside it. The U.S. Coast Guard treats a PWC as a Class A inboard boat (less than 16 feet long), and current production models carry one to three riders with engines from roughly 60 to 325 hp. "Jet ski" is the everyday name most people use for these craft.

## Key takeaways

- The U.S. Coast Guard classifies a personal watercraft as a Class A inboard boat, so the general federal boating rules for powerboats apply, plus any PWC-specific state rules.

- A PWC has no external propeller: an engine-driven impeller inside a pump housing draws water in under the hull and forces it out through a steerable nozzle.

- The main types are stand-up, rec-lite, recreation, touring or luxury, performance, and fishing or utility models.

- Most current models use fuel-injected four-stroke engines of about 0.9 to 1.8 liters, and the most powerful are supercharged.

- Rec-lite models weigh around 425 to 460 lb dry, while large touring and fishing models can exceed 850 lb dry or about 1,000 lb with fuel and fluids.

- Age, education and equipment rules for PWC operators are set mainly by states and national authorities, so they vary by location.

## What is a personal watercraft?

A personal watercraft is a jet-propelled small craft designed to be ridden on, not in. The rider straddles a seat or stands on a deck, steers with handlebars and controls speed with a hand throttle, much like a motorcycle on water.

Most state laws in the US use a similar definition: a vessel under 16 feet, powered by an inboard engine driving a water-jet pump, designed to be operated by a person sitting, standing or kneeling on it. The exact wording differs from state to state, so check the local statute if the definition matters for registration, insurance or rental rules.

### What type of vessel is a PWC considered?

Personal watercraft are considered inboard boats, specifically Class A vessels (under 16 feet) in U.S. Coast Guard terms. That means a PWC must generally be registered, display its numbers, carry the required safety equipment and follow the same navigation rules as any other powerboat. Many states add PWC-only rules on top, such as minimum operator ages, daylight-only operation and mandatory life jacket wear.

### What does "jet ski" mean?

Jet Ski is a registered Kawasaki trademark that has become a generic word for any PWC in everyday speech. In this article we use "jet ski" because that is how most people search, and "personal watercraft" or "PWC" as the correct technical term.

## How does a jet ski work?

A jet ski works by pumping water, not by turning an open propeller. The engine spins an impeller inside a sealed pump at the back of the hull, and the reaction to the high-speed water jet pushes the craft forward.

The propulsion sequence is:

- **Intake.** Water enters through a grate in the bottom of the hull, just ahead of the pump.

- **Impeller.** A driveshaft from the engine turns a multi-blade impeller that runs inside a close-fitting wear ring.

- **Stator vanes.** Fixed vanes behind the impeller straighten the swirling flow so more energy becomes thrust.

- **Venturi nozzle.** The flow is squeezed through a narrowing nozzle, which raises its velocity.

- **Steering nozzle.** The handlebars swivel the nozzle left or right to turn the craft.

- **Reverse and braking.** A bucket or gate can drop over the nozzle to redirect thrust forward for reverse, and many models use the same system for electronic braking.

Because steering depends on thrust, a traditional PWC loses most of its steering when the throttle is released. Manufacturers have added off-throttle steering assistance and, since the late 2000s, electronic braking and reverse systems on many models. These features matter for beginners and rental fleets.

A lanyard or engine cut-off switch stops the engine if the rider falls off. Most PWC engines are cooled by raw water picked up from the pump, though some newer engines use a closed-loop system. Either way, regular flushing after saltwater use is part of normal care.

## What are the different types of jet skis?

There are six common types of personal watercraft, defined mainly by size, seating and power. The figures below are typical ranges for current production models; individual models vary, so check the manufacturer's data sheet.

| Type | Riders | Typical power | Typical dry weight | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Stand-up | 1 | About 100–160 hp | About 350–550 lb | Skilled riders, freestyle, racing |
| Rec-lite | 1–3 | 60–100 hp | About 425–650 lb | Beginners, budget buyers, easy towing |
| Recreation | 2–3 | 110–180 hp | About 650–800 lb | Families, all-round use, rental fleets |
| Touring and luxury | 3 | 160–325 hp | About 750–1,050 lb | Long rides, comfort, open water |
| Performance | 1–3 | 230–325 hp | About 750–1,050 lb | Acceleration, handling, top speed |
| Fishing and utility | 1–3 | 130–250 hp | About 780–950 lb | Fishing, towing, cargo, patrol |

### Stand-up vs sit-down jet skis

A stand-up jet ski is a short, narrow, single-rider craft that the rider steers by shifting body weight while standing or kneeling. Stand-up personal watercraft demand more balance and fitness, have little storage and suit enthusiasts rather than casual users. Sit-down models are far more common because they are stable at rest, carry passengers and are easier to learn.

### Fishing jet skis

A fishing jet ski is a sit-down PWC with a larger, more stable hull, a rear cargo platform, rod holders, cooler mounts and often a fish finder. Fishing PWC appeal to anglers who want to reach offshore spots quickly without the cost and storage of a boat. They are heavier and slower to turn than recreation models, and fuel range is a key selection point.

### Is there a 4 person jet ski?

Mainstream production PWC are rated for one to three riders, with a combined load capacity commonly around 600 lb on larger models. Groups of four usually move up to a small jet boat. Always follow the capacity label on the craft.

## Who makes personal watercraft?

Three manufacturers account for most personal watercraft sold worldwide: BRP (Sea-Doo), Yamaha (WaveRunner) and Kawasaki (Jet Ski). Smaller companies build stand-up models, and electric PWC from start-up builders are entering the market in limited numbers.

For B2B buyers, the more useful questions are about support rather than badges:

- **Dealer and parts network.** Can impellers, wear rings, filters and electronic modules be sourced quickly in your country?

- **Diagnostic access.** Do your technicians have the dealer software or tools to read fault codes and service records?

- **Model continuity.** Will the same hull and engine stay in production long enough to keep a fleet consistent?

- **Warranty handling.** Who services warranty claims locally, and is commercial or rental use covered?

## Which personal watercraft is best for beginners, fishing or a fleet?

The best personal watercraft depends on who will ride it and how many hours it will run. For beginners, a rec-lite or recreation model with braking, reverse and a speed-limited learning mode is usually the safest choice. For fishing, a fishing-specific hull with at least 170 hp and an 18-gallon-class tank is a common starting point.

For resort and rental fleets, durability and simplicity count more than top speed. Operators typically look for:

- Naturally aspirated engines in the 90–170 hp range, which are simpler and cheaper to maintain than supercharged engines.

- Three-seat stability so families and inexperienced riders stay upright.

- Speed or mode limiting that staff can set for new customers.

- Braking and reverse for safer docking.

- Rental-oriented variants, such as the [130 hp touring rental model](/products/personal-watercraft/sea-doo-gtx-pro-130-touring-personal-watercraft-130-hp/) , where available.

## What rules apply to operating a PWC?

Personal watercraft rules are set mainly by states in the US and by national or regional authorities elsewhere. Common requirements include:

- Wearing an approved life jacket on board.

- Attaching the engine cut-off lanyard to the operator.

- Minimum operator ages, often between 12 and 16 depending on the state.

- Boating safety education certificates for some or all operators.

- Daylight-only operation in many states.

- Restrictions on wake jumping, speed near swimmers, docks and other vessels.

Outside the US, some jurisdictions require a dedicated PWC licence or endorsement. New South Wales in Australia, for example, has a separate PWC licence. Always check the local maritime authority before operating or renting out a PWC.

## Sourcing personal watercraft for resorts and dealers

Resorts, rental operators and importers usually buy PWC in mixed batches: a few rec-lite units for first-timers, recreation or touring models for the core fleet and one or two high-output units for experienced guests. MARS supplies [personal watercraft](/products/personal-watercraft/) from compact 90 hp models to supercharged touring and performance craft, with export packing and shipment FOB or CIF from Shanghai. A typical example is our [resort watercraft fleet project](/projects/resort-watercraft-fleet-sea-doo/) , and our [PWC fleet maintenance schedule](/blog/outboard-and-pwc-fleet-maintenance-schedule/) covers keeping those units on the water.

## Frequently asked questions

Is a jet ski considered a boat?

Yes. In the US a jet ski is legally a vessel, classified by the Coast Guard as a Class A inboard boat. It must be registered and operated under the same navigation rules as other powerboats, plus any PWC-specific state rules.

What is the difference between a jet ski and a personal watercraft?

There is no technical difference. Personal watercraft is the generic term, while Jet Ski is a Kawasaki trademark that many people use for any PWC.

Do personal watercraft have propellers?

No. A PWC uses an enclosed impeller inside a jet pump, so there is no exposed propeller. Riders should still keep clear of the intake grate and the nozzle, and stop the engine before anyone approaches the rear of the craft.

How many people can ride a personal watercraft?

Most PWC are rated for one, two or three riders. The capacity label on the craft states the maximum number of people and total load, and both must be respected.

What is a fishing PWC?

A fishing PWC is a sit-down personal watercraft with a stable hull and fishing equipment such as a cargo platform, rod holders and a fish finder. It is built to carry gear offshore and is usually heavier than a recreation model.

Are stand-up jet skis good for beginners?

Generally not. Stand-up jet skis require balance, strength and practice, so most beginners and rental customers start on a stable sit-down model.
