# Semi Truck Engine Guide: Replacement Diesels for Trucks

> A semi truck engine is usually an 11-15 L inline-six diesel of 400-600 hp. Learn how to choose a replacement: new, long block, reman, rebuilt or used.

Engines & Power

A semi truck engine is almost always a turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel of about 11 to 15 liters, rated roughly 400 to 600 hp with peak torque of about 1,450 to 2,050 lb-ft. When a truck engine fails, operators can replace it with a new complete engine, a new long block, a remanufactured or rebuilt unit, or a used engine, and the right choice depends on the truck's remaining life, downtime cost and the emission rules where it is registered.

## Key takeaways

- Most semi trucks and heavy lorries use inline six-cylinder diesels; a few flagship European trucks use larger 16–17 liter engines, some of them V8s.

- Typical North American linehaul ratings sit around 400–500 hp, while the most powerful European production truck engines are rated at up to about 780 hp from 17 liters.

- Medium-duty trucks typically use 4- or 6-cylinder diesels of about 4 to 9 liters producing roughly 150–350 hp.

- A replacement engine must match the original's flywheel housing, mounts, cooling, electronics, PTO and aftertreatment, or the swap becomes a re-engineering project.

- In the US, EPA engine-switching guidance generally requires a replacement that matches a certified configuration of the same or newer model year; other markets have their own rules.

## What engines do semi trucks have?

Semi trucks almost universally use heavy-duty four-stroke diesels with six cylinders in line. The inline six is naturally balanced, fits between the frame rails and gives long-stroke torque at low rpm, which is ideal for hauling 40-ton combinations.

Displacements cluster in three bands. Lighter regional tractors often use 11–12 liter engines, the mainstream linehaul choice is about 13 liters, and heavy-haul and mountain operators often choose about 15 liters. Industry coverage notes that a 13 liter engine can be several hundred pounds lighter than a 15 liter one, so many fleets "rightsize" to save weight and fuel.

## How much horsepower and torque does a semi truck have?

Most semi truck horsepower ratings fall between about 400 and 600 hp. Torque matters more than horsepower for hauling, and heavy truck engines typically deliver about 1,450–2,050 lb-ft (roughly 2,000–2,800 N·m) at 1,000–1,400 rpm.

| Truck class | Typical engine | Typical power | Typical torque |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Light truck and pickup | 4-cylinder, 2.5–3.0 L | 100–180 hp | 200–330 lb-ft |
| Medium-duty truck and lorry | 4- or 6-cylinder, 4–9 L | 150–350 hp | 400–1,000 lb-ft |
| Regional semi tractor | Inline 6, 11–13 L | 350–455 hp | 1,250–1,700 lb-ft |
| Linehaul semi tractor | Inline 6, 13–15 L | 400–565 hp | 1,450–2,050 lb-ft |
| Heavy haul and flagship | Inline 6 or V8, 15–17 L | 550–780 hp | 1,850–2,800 lb-ft |

Ranges are indicative and vary by manufacturer and market. As a rule of thumb from fleet practice, about 400 hp suits flat routes at normal gross weight, around 450–500 hp suits hilly routes, and heavier combinations or steep work need more. Among the most powerful diesel engines in production trucks is a 17 liter unit rated about 780 hp and 3,800 N·m, introduced in 2024 for very heavy European haulage.

## How many cylinders does a semi truck engine have?

Almost all have six cylinders, arranged in line. A small number of European heavy tractors use V8 engines of about 16 liters, and some older North American trucks used V8s, but the inline six dominates today. Medium-duty trucks may use four or six cylinders.

## Which is the best and most reliable truck engine?

The most reliable truck engine is the one rated comfortably for your gross weight and route, with good parts support where you operate. A 13 liter engine pulled hard on mountain routes at maximum weight will wear faster than a 15 liter engine doing the same work at lower specific load.

Reliability also depends on emissions hardware. Modern on-highway diesels use EGR, diesel particulate filters and SCR with diesel exhaust fluid, and many breakdowns trace to sensors, injectors or aftertreatment rather than the base engine. When comparing truck engines, ask about:

- Rated power and torque against your gross combination weight.

- Expected life to overhaul (often quoted as a B10 or B50 figure by the maker).

- Availability of injectors, turbochargers, sensors and filters in your region.

- Aftertreatment design and its known maintenance needs.

- Dealer or workshop familiarity with the engine family.

## What are the replacement options for a truck engine?

There are five main options, each with a different balance of cost, downtime and risk. The table compares them.

| Option | What you get | Advantages | Watch-outs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| New complete engine | Full engine with accessories, often with ECM | Longest life, full warranty, fastest fit if it matches | Highest price; must match emissions certification |
| New long block | Block, crank, pistons, head and valvetrain | Reuse good accessories; lower cost than complete | Accessories must be transferred and checked |
| Remanufactured engine | Factory-standard rebuild to specification | Lower cost, warranty, exchange core credit | Core must be returned in rebuildable condition |
| In-frame or out-of-frame rebuild | Your own engine overhauled | Keeps original serial and calibration | Downtime while the shop works; quality varies |
| Used engine | Pulled from another vehicle | Lowest upfront cost | Unknown history; little or no warranty |

For a deeper comparison, see [long block vs short block vs complete engine](/blog/long-block-vs-short-block-engine/) and [remanufactured vs rebuilt vs new diesel engines](/blog/remanufactured-vs-rebuilt-vs-new-diesel-engines/) . For a truck with many years of service left, a new engine or quality reman usually wins on cost per mile; for a truck near retirement, a used or rebuilt engine may make more sense.

## How do I match a replacement engine to my truck?

Match the engine to the truck, not just to the old horsepower. Before buying, collect the engine model and serial number from the data plate and check these points:

- **Engine model and emissions certification**, including the model year and the certified configuration.

- **Flywheel housing and flywheel** (commonly SAE No. 1 or No. 2 on heavy trucks) to fit the clutch and gearbox.

- **Engine mounts and front cover** to suit the chassis.

- **Electronics:** ECM, wiring harness, sensors and software calibration, plus any vehicle-level CAN messages.

- **Cooling and charge-air connections** that match the radiator and intercooler.

- **Ancillaries:** air compressor, power steering pump, alternator, starter and PTO drives.

- **Exhaust and aftertreatment** position and compatibility.

Getting one of these wrong is the most common cause of delays after the engine arrives. Supplying photos of both sides of the old engine and the data plate lets a supplier confirm the match before shipping.

## Which rules apply to replacement truck engines?

Emission rules decide which engines can legally be fitted. In the US, EPA's engine-switching guidance generally requires that a heavy-duty replacement result in a certified configuration of the same or newer model year, and foreign-built engines not covered by a US certificate usually cannot be installed in US-registered trucks.

Other regions apply their own standards, such as Euro VI in Europe and China VI in China, and many export markets register trucks to earlier standards. US rules for model year 2027 and later heavy-duty engines were still being revised by EPA during 2026, so confirm current requirements with your local authority or dealer before ordering. Engines from Chinese manufacturers, for example a [530 hp heavy-truck engine](/products/diesel-engines/weichai-wp13-530e40-truck-diesel-engine-390-kw-530-hp/) or a [270 hp medium-duty engine](/products/diesel-engines/weichai-wp7-270e40-truck-diesel-engine-199-kw-270-hp/) , are widely used in markets across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America; check the certification for your destination.

## What about lorry and medium-duty truck engines?

Lorries and medium-duty trucks use smaller diesels than semis, typically 4- or 6-cylinder engines of 4 to 9 liters. These power box trucks, tippers, buses and municipal vehicles, and many are also used in construction and mining equipment.

The [mining truck engine project](/projects/mining-truck-engines-cummins-isde-weichai-wp13/) shows a fleet that standardized on a 6-cylinder medium-duty engine and a 13 liter heavy engine to simplify spares. Lighter trucks and pickups use 4-cylinder diesels of about 2.5 to 3 liters. For all classes, keep a stock of oil, fuel and air filters; the [heavy-duty oil filter cross reference guide](/blog/heavy-duty-oil-filter-cross-reference-bulk/) explains how to buy them in bulk.

Shanghai Mars Industrial (MARS) supplies new truck engines for heavy, medium and light trucks, confirms fitment against the old engine's data plate, and can test-run engines before dispatch with a written report and video. [Send your truck and engine details](/contact/) for a quotation.

## Frequently asked questions

How much horsepower does a semi truck have?

Most semi trucks have about 400 to 600 hp. North American linehaul tractors commonly run 400–500 hp, while the most powerful European production trucks reach about 780 hp.

How long does a semi truck engine last?

Heavy truck diesels are typically designed to run many hundreds of thousands of miles before a major overhaul, and well-maintained engines can exceed a million miles. Actual life depends on load, route and maintenance.

Can I put a different engine in my semi truck?

Sometimes, but it requires matching mounts, flywheel housing, electronics, cooling and aftertreatment, and the swap must comply with emission rules where the truck is registered. Replacing with the same engine family is usually far simpler.

What is a semi truck generator or APU?

An auxiliary power unit is a small engine-driven generator, usually a small diesel, mounted on the truck to supply heating, cooling and electrical power while the main engine is off. It reduces idling fuel use and engine wear.

What filters does a semi truck engine need?

A heavy truck engine uses oil filters, primary and secondary fuel filters (often with a water separator), an air filter, and on many engines a coolant filter and a crankcase ventilation filter. Intervals vary by engine and duty cycle, so follow the maker's schedule.
